Ben Lucas, (born 30 December 1987 in Ipswich, Queensland), is an Australian rugby union player for the Queensland Reds in the international Super 14 competition.
Lucas was educated at Robertson State School, then St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace where he was an Australian schoolboy representative. Lucas claimed the eye of then Australian coach John Connolly when he claimed a personal tally of 35 points in the Brisbane club competition final where his club Sunnybank beat the Gold Coast by 85-19, Lucas creating nearly every play from Fly Half in the riot over the Coast. Lucas was invited by the Queensland Reds to train with them in preparation for the 2008 Super 14 season and was switched to the position of Halfback by Reds coach Phil Mooney due to the injury of usual Queensland Halves Sam Cordingley and Will Genia and has since been a revalation in the number 9 jersey. His form at Halfback was so good that found himself being considered for a Wallaby in the upcoming Tri Nations series but was however selected in the Australia A for the Pacific Nations Cup. He was selected as the starting Flyhalf for the first game against Japan. He was expected to be selected in Australia's team for the Tri Nations, his versatility of being able to play quality rugby at both Halfback and Fly Half to work in his favor as Australia lack quality depth in both positions off the bench. However, he was not included in the Wallabies squad.[1]
Ben performed well for the Reds in 2009 before a painful rib cartilage injury intervened, which allowed Genia to reclaim the No 9 jersey. End of season injuries in the squad meant a switch to fullback for Ben against the Crusaders before ending the season at 9 with Will sidelined.
Ben continued to show his versatility in 2010. However, Genia's form and consistency cemented him at halfback, as well as gaining captaincy of the Reds. Lucas' versatility however kept him in the squad, and he was rewarded with another two-year contract.[2] Strong performances saw Lucas continue to develop at fullback, including a solid effort in the thrilling victory over the Highlanders in the final round at Suncorp Stadium. However, Ben left the field prematurely with a knee injury.[3] Lucas developed amazingly for the 2011 Super Rugby campaign, becoming a regular at fullback with regular fullback Peter Hynes injured.
